Myths about moving for taxes

What people often believe, and what tax offices actually apply.

01 Spending 182 days abroad is enough

False. Most countries also look at your home, family and economic interests, not only days.

02 A company in a tax haven solves everything

False. A company is taxed where it is really managed. If you run it from home, it is taxed at home.

03 Digital nomads pay no tax anywhere

False. If you are not resident anywhere, your old country often keeps you as its resident.

04 Zero tax countries are only for millionaires

False. Some, like Georgia, Paraguay or Panama, have affordable residency.

05 Leaving is free

Not always. Exit taxes and rules that follow you for years can apply.

06 A residency certificate makes you non-resident at home

Not on its own. It helps, but your old country still applies its own tests.

07 It is illegal to move to pay less tax

False. Choosing where you live is legal. Faking it is what is illegal.

08 Once you leave, the tax office forgets you

False. Some countries check years later, especially if you move to a blacklisted country.
